Portable $50 Record Player

This retro-style Amazon Basics suitcase turntable is an inexpensive way to rediscover your vinyl collection. Audiophiles with precious LPs should steer clear, but this lets you play your dusty collection without committing to a complex setup. It has built-in stereo speakers and it plays all three speeds (33/45/78). Bonus: it doubles as a Bluetooth speaker for your phone. — MF

Uncanny a cappella covers of popular show themes

Maytree is a Korean a cappella group that recreates popular theme songs with stunning precision. Their vocal performances are so spot-on that you'd swear you were hearing actual instruments. My favorites include their renditions of Pyscho, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, The Godfather, and SpongeBob SquarePants. — MF

Audience choirs

Something super-magical happens when people sing collectively in harmony. We don’t do it very much any more. Musical genius Jacob Collier is trying to change that with his audience choirs—the audience sings, in harmony, without practice. It can be profoundly beautiful. As example, listen to this concert at the Kennedy Center that begins with an Irish ballad. If that works for you, there’s longer audience harmony at Academy Brixton in London. Other performers, such as Pub Choir, are doing this as well on world tours. If you have a chance, give communal signing a try. — KK

Music generating AI

After years of crummy AI-generated music apps, there are now several music generators that are worth spending time with. I’ve been staying up late at night tweaking prompts to make complete songs using Suno. Just like using an image generator, I give Suno a wordy description of the song, mood, beat, that I am looking for, and it generates a very listenable song, with pretty good lyrics, bridges, choruses, and album cover art! The free version of Suno gives you 10 songs per day, maxed out at 2 minutes per track. I use these as soundtracks for video shorts. There are a couple other recent apps, but I like Suno the best and will pay for a subscription. It is good enough for anyone to try out. — KK

Similar Song Finder

This search engine Similar Song Finder is helpful for creating Spotify playlists based on your favorite song of the moment. I tested it out with songs of different genres and it’s great for creating “mood” playlists. — CD
